The American University, a private doctoral institution situated in Washington, DC, seeks applications for a talented Senior Compensation Consultant/Compensation Manager to join the team in the Office of Human Resources. AU’s more than 12,000 students are globally diverse and the university’s mission is carried out by 848 full-time faculty and nearly 1,700 full-time staff. 94 percent of full-time faculty hold the highest degree in their field and among our adjunct faculty are policy makers, diplomats, journalists, artists, writers, scientists and business leaders.    

The Senior Compensation Consultant is responsible for directing the strategic planning, design, implementation, maintenance, compliance, communication and administration of staff compensation consistent with the organization’s human capital objectives.  The Senior Compensation Consultant will collaborate with Departments and HR Business Partners on workforce and organization planning.    

Reporting to the Senior Director of HR Service Delivery, this position will work closely with the AVP of Human Resources and the Human Resources Teams, in particular Benefits, Recruiting and Service Delivery and Operations to ensure a cohesive total compensation strategy. This position will have frequent interactions with managers in departments across campus, and may serve as an HR Business Partner to a university department.    
Educational Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree is required. Master’s degree and/or CCP is preferred.
Minimum Requirements:
  • At least 10 years’ progressively responsible experience in compensation or equivalent in education, training and experience
  • Knowledge, understanding and application of Federal and State employment laws
  • High proficiency in financial analysis, modeling and budgeting
  • High proficiency in data analytics and use of excel
  • Demonstrated experience leading compensation design changes from concept to execution
  • Expertise in design, development, implementation and administration of all types of compensation programs
  • High proficiency in consultation skills, executive coaching, customer service skills, strategic communications, collaboration, interpersonal and management skills
Preferred Requirements:
  • Experience working with Ellucian/Colleague and Successfactors
