|The Director, Parent Advancement is the central officer of American University charged with strengthening opportunities for current parents to become engaged as donors and volunteers in the university community. The goals of this position include increasing fundraising revenue from parent donors and positively reinforcing the educational experience of their students, thereby helping to shape their education as future alumni. Reporting to the Director of Development, University-wide Initiatives, in coordination with the directives set forth by the Assistant Vice President of Alumni Relations, the Director, Parent Advancement is a major gifts officer who coordinates with the Assistant Vice Presidents of Development regarding major gift activity, and is engaged by the Office of Campus Life and other units, including schools and colleges, as a resource to assist in the resolution of individual concerns raised by parents (referring matters to Campus Life as appropriate). |
The Director, Parent Advancement will interact with the Office of Campus Life regarding matters intersecting parents, alumni relations, and development, in an effort to leverage existing opportunities and create new opportunities with current parents. Under the direction of the Director of Development, University-wide Initiatives, the Director, Parent Advancement will serve as a major gifts consultant or officer for prospects for Campus Life regardless of their status as parents. Accordingly, the Director, Parent Advancement will oversee the Parent’s Leadership Council, and its major gift activities along with the Associate Director, Parent and Volunteer Programs. This position does not supervise the Associate Director position which is devoted to annual fund giving by parents.
The Director, Parent Advancement functions as a counterpart to Directors of Development at AU’s schools and colleges, connecting major donors and major donor prospects with the areas of the university in which they have greatest interest, and therefore can make the greatest impact.
In addition to major gift cultivation and solicitation, the Director, Parent Advancement will work with appropriate counterparts in Annual Giving, particularly the Associate Director for Parent and Volunteer Programs, to ensure meaningful and efficient annual solicitation strategies for his or her client areas.
The Director, Parent Advancement, like all officers, serves as an ambassador of American University and is a representative of the University, advancing the initiatives and events directed by the Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations.
|A Bachelor’s degree is required. A Master’s degree is preferred.
|- 5 to 7 years of experience in development, constituent, alumni or parent relations, showing progressive responsibilities, and with demonstrated success in closing major gifts of $25,000 or more from individuals, corporations, or foundations|
- Familiarity with higher education and/or parent experiences and concerns
- Experience working with high-level organization administrators
- Excellent oral and written communication skills demonstrated by clear, concise, and persuasive writing, public speaking, and private discourse
- Ability to manage several projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment
- High-level proficiency with MS Office programs including MS Word and MS Excel; capable of handling most letter writing, printing, and mailing
- Experience with fundraising management systems or other custom databases, preferably with Benefactor

- Previous experience with publications (both print and electronic)
|This position requires travel with work on evenings and weekends.
