The Director of Strategic Communication leads the communications and marketing efforts for the newly established School of Professional & Extended Studies (SPExS). This position establishes internal and external communication with key stakeholders. The incumbent manages and implements the marketing and branding strategies and materials in support of the School’s enrollment including business development and reputation building goals. The Director manages and maintains the School’s web and social media presence; as well as events planning. The incumbent will work closely with program directors and other administrative units in the School and across the University in the development, design and distribution of integrated marketing plans and materials, and developing content for media relations. This position manages special events for/with students, alumni, faculty, other American university and public audiences; relationships with external vendors and designers. The Director administers the communications/marketing operational budget. This position will also work collaboratively with American University Marketing and Communications, and Information Technology offices.     
Educational Requirements:
A Bachelor's degree is required. A Master's degree in communications, public relations, marketing, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience is preferred.
Minimum Requirements:
- At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in marketing management, advertising, public relations, or related area with a proven track record of developing and executing marketing, communications, and social media plans
- Experience in events planning
- Strong interpersonal and written communication, presentation, and problem solving skills with technical competency in database, design, and publishing software
- Excellent attention to detail with proven ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced, high pressure environment
- Demonstrated leadership competency and ability to develop productive working relationships with multiple constituencies (faculty, staff, students, and alumni)
- Familiarity with a university environment including the organizational and administrative functions of major colleges and universities
- Ability to be a self starter and flexible
Preferred Requirements:
- Graphic design experience

The School of Professional & Extended Studies (SPExS) offers a full range of life-long experiential educational and training programs for pre-collegiate to post-retirement populations.
