Description:
The Director of Athletics and Recreation is responsible for providing leadership and administrative oversight for the Department of Athletics and Recreation and the Jacobs Fitness Center.  The director is accountable for implementation of and compliance with NCAA, Patriot League and institutional guidelines for the university’s intercollegiate athletics program.  Other principal responsibilities include oversight of departmental fundraising, public and media relations, and campus and community relations as they affect the athletics, recreational and fitness programs.  The athletics director works with a high level of independence under the broad, general supervision of the university president, and is a member of the President’s senior administrative team.       

The Director of Athletics and Recreation reports directly to the university president.  Reporting to the director are Associate Directors for:  Business; Development and Special Events; Compliance and Internal Operations; Communications; and the Senior Woman Administrator.  Also reporting to the athletics director are the Director of Recreational Sports and Fitness, head coaches, and an administrative assistant.  Operation of the university’s athletic program involves strategic planning, financial and facilities management; communications, media relations and marketing; event management, campus and community outreach and fund raising. The athletics director partners with AU’s Office of Development and Alumni Relations in Eagles Club and major gifts fund raising. All institutional, Patriot League, and NCAA activities must be coordinated consistent with the mission of the university.     
Educational Requirements:
A Master’s degree or the equivalent in training and experience is desired.
Minimum Requirements:
A minimum of five years of experience as a senior-level athletic administrator with demonstrated abilities in human resources, financial management and fund raising.  The candidate must demonstrate an understanding of university culture and a commitment to leading a competitive intercollegiate sports program in the context of an academically rigorous collegiate environment.
